Hyaluronic Acid is all the rage.

Hyaluronic acid is all the rage!

But what is it and how does it work?

Hyaluronic acid, the anti-ageing nutrient. The fountain of youth!!! Whether it's in a capsule, a serum, a moisturiser or an injectable...you need it!

Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in our body and performs a vital role in keeping the skin young, juicy and good looking. It works on the epidermis to hydrate skin for longer, as well as stimulate collagen production. Hyaluronic acid is now widely available. I'm always reading something about it and of course buying various products to try, including some professional input. I'm going to deliberately focus on the skin benefits in this blog as i'm obsessed with skin.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

In addition to the skin benefits, this gel-like water holding molecule also cushions joints, nerves, hydrates hair, stimulates collagen production and fills the eye protecting against numerous possible eye concerns.

And like all good things it reduces as we age! The latest research in 'Characteristics of Ageing Skin':

With age, we can lose up to two-thirds of our hyaluronic acid pool. And by age 35 the skin's thickness has decreased on average by 22%. By age 40 our Hyaluronic levels could be 50% less.

Skin Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid

The main reasons for ageing skin includes excess of oxidants (free radicals) and loss of hyaluronic acid. As skin gets thinner, it becomes more fragile, dehydrated, dull, with diminished elasticity. Add to this those who have had too much UV-exposure, smoke, eat an unhealthy diet full of sugar and processed carbs and live in a smoggy toxic environment. The skin takes a proper hammering and loses the ability to retain water. Our skin is our biggest organ so let's nourish and look after it.

Hello Hyaluronic acid (HA).

HA helps to retain over a 1000 times its own weight in water within the cells of the skin, making it an excellent serum and moisturiser. In fact, no other biological substance can retain as much water as HA resulting in increased smoothness, soft, plump, hydrated and less wrinkled skin.

A primary cause of degeneration of the collagen network of the skin is the decreased levels of hydrated hyaluronic acid, which supports the collagen network. Restoring hyaluronic acid plumps the skin cells and restores moisture in all the tissues of the body.

In an article “HA: How To Live 100 Years Without Growing Old” the author, Bill Sardi, describes HA as a revolutionary natural molecule that stops or even reverses ageing and that HA is the modern day “fountain of youth”. He writes that HA helps to erase fine facial ageing lines and wrinkles and can produce wound healing without scarring. With the volume of evidence growing regarding the attributes of HA, it is also being acclaimed by the press “as the key to the fountain of youth”

Not all HA's found in skincare products are the same. The formulation matters. Low molecular weight micrometric HA will penetrate deeper into the skin and be more effective.

Some supplements contain sodium hyaluronate, the active form of hyaluronic acid, which has a smaller particle size making it especially more penetrative. Due to its high visco-elasticity and lubricity, sodium hyaluronate has been used to treat inflammatory joint concerns as well as used topically in anti-ageing creams.

Equally important is its ability to remove waste matter from cells including those where there is little blood circulation. I recommend these HA high strength capsules with collagen. I take 2 every day. I combine hyaluronic acid and Collagen. These are my preferred serums, masks and supplements:

I apply HA serum daily, and always after my derma face rolling as the skin will absorb topical products up to 300% more than without derma rolling. Check out my at home derma roller followed by HA serum blog.

I also use my red light therapy mask as often as possible.

HA is destroyed by the body, so i suggest regular professional treatments, weekly masks and daily supplements and serums. If you opt for injections like mesotherapy with HA then I suggest get this treatment every 6 months to provide your skin with intense and extended hydration. A combination of the above will support the skin's natural HA reservoir to keep your skin firm, glowing, full of volume and elasticity with smoothed out wrinkles.

We cannot afford to be without Hyaluronic acid!

At the time of writing, there were no well-known drug interactions with the use of Hyaluronic Acid capsules.
